Joe Rothwell felt it was four ‘weak’ goals conceded by Rovers in their latest away day defeat.

Rovers have now lost seven of their last nine Championship matches and have shipped 42 goals in their 19 fixtures away from home.

The Owls didn’t have to work hard for the four goals they scored in the 4-2 win in a game that Rovers dominated for long spells.

Rothwell was one of the bright spots in the defeat, in what was just a sixth Championship start, but Rovers go in to the international break having collected just four points from the last 27 available.

“We’re all bitterly disappointed. Four weak goals we conceded,” Rothwell said.

“We’ve come away from home and scored two goals again but not managed to get everything from the game.

“Everyone is bitterly disappointed.

“The manner of the goals we’re conceding, I don’t think we’re getting cut open by any team, it’s mistakes and set pieces which are killing us.

“That’s something we need to look at and assess.”

Rovers controlled the game in difficult conditions at Hillsborough, but a lack of height, and organisation in defence, was costly once again.

Tony Mowbray will hope to have Darragh Lenihan, Charlie Mulgrew, Jack Rodwell and Amari’i Bell back for the trip to Aston Villa on March 30.

It was the fourth time in their last five away matches that Rovers have scored twice, but the goals against column continues to be a real concern.

But Rovers also had chances they didn’t take in attack, and the 24-year-old added: “That’s the way our luck is going. You have these runs where you lose games and nothing seems to drop for you in the opposition box.

“We can take the positives that we’re getting in the positions and creating the chances and hopefully they will start falling our way.”

Rothwell’s impact off the bench in the last three matches was enough to prompt Mowbray in to handing him just his sixth league start.

It is something that supporters have been calling for, given his impressive performances off the bench. The summer singing came up with a second assist of the season when teeing up Craig Conway, but his wait for a goal goes on.

And of his own performance, he said: “I felt I did all right. I looked to do what I normally do, get on the ball and drive forward and try and create things.

“I maybe need to be a bit more selfish at times, take a few shots on myself and that’s something I will look at and try and improve.

“I heard him (Conway) shouting for it and luckily no-one was there when I reversed it.”
