Stanley defender Ross Sykes has penned a new long-term deal with the club.

The 19-year-old put pen to paper on a new contract which runs until 2022, with the option for a further year.

Sykes is currently recovering from a groin injury, but is hoping to be back in training next Monday and back in contention for the trip to Burton Albion a week on Saturday.

After being released from Burnley’s Academy, Sykes arrived at the Wham Stadium at the age of 13.

He has played 25 times for Stanley in all competitions, 17 coming this season, while he has also scored two goals.

“I am delighted to sign a new deal,” said the Burnley-born centre half.

“It’s a reward for the hard work I have put in, it offers me security for the future and I am happy to have been playing regularly this season.

“Last season, I didn’t play a game but this season, after working hard in the summer, I have played a number of league and cup games and I feel I have done well.

“It’s brilliant to play alongside Mark Hughes, who talks to me all the time and shares his experience.

“This season is a big season for me and I can’t wait to be back playing again.”
