Tony Mowbray says it was another ‘unacceptable’ opening 20 minutes from Rovers who were ultimately left frustrated by only taking one point from St Andrew’s.

Rovers trailed to Che Adams’ 16th minute strike, but looked like taking three points back to East Lancashire after an improved second half which saw goals from Charlie Mulgrew and Danny Graham put them ahead.

Graham’s goal with seven minutes to play looked to have set Rovers on their way to a first win of the month, only for Adams to equalise within 90 seconds.

It was another late goal conceded by Rovers, who threw yet more points away, something Mowbray described as ‘the elephant in the room’.

Reflecting on the game, the boss said: “The frustration is there in the dressing room to feel.

“Let’s talk about the game, the first 20 minutes was unacceptable again. I think there was a lack of confidence and fear in the team after losing four games on the bounce and that reflected what happened.

“No-one pressed the ball, no-one was on the front foot.

“I want to get to a stage with this football team where I don’t have to get off the bench and shout like an idiot, yet it took that for some people to start going forward and winning some balls in midfield, breaking, and looking like we could hurt the opposition.

“I thought for the last 20 minutes of the first half we did that, put them on the back foot and they thought ‘wow, this isn’t going to be as easy as we thought’.

“We get a goal, and that took a bit of the anxiety out of things, gave us a platform to build and put the pressure on. I felt we could win the game.

“It went end to end for a bit, they made some attacking substitutions and then we scored on the break through a deflected goal.

“You expect to win the game from there. It’s like the elephant in the room, it’s not the first time it’s happened where we’ve thrown away points from a winning position, Elland Road being the prime example of that.

“We had to take a point from being 2-1 up with seven minutes to play, so there’s a real frustration.

“But then the spirit of the team, Armstrong breaks away down the right deep in injury time and Dack at full stretch can’t quite turn it in to the net.

“I thought it epitomised our team a little bit, really frustrating for the first 20 minutes, really good in spells, an amazing effort, and we come away with a point which stops the rut of defeats.

“We put the point in the bag and move on to the next one at Rotherham.”
