Tony Mowbray believes the players, and staff, at Rovers, have bought in to his values as he marks two years in the job.

He arrived with Rovers in a precarious position in the Championship, with 15 games to save their season, something they narrowly missed out on despite picking up 22 points in that time.

Mowbray then oversaw an immediate promotion from League One, with Rovers having consolidated back in the Championship this campaign.

The boss believes that has been possible because of those he has working around him, and the culture he has been allowed to create.

He explained: “As a coach, as a manager, I know what I do at every club I’ve ever gone to, I bring my values, my personal skills, I bring the culture I want to try and create at a football club.

“People either like it or they don’t like it. They think it’s a load of tosh or think they can see what I’m trying to do.

“I don’t believe you can just go in to a football club and turn water in to wine, you have to nurture it, set an example and lead by that example, set the tone by the way you talk, by what you do, your actions and then people either follow or they don’t. If they don’t then they have to go while you’re the manager.

“Some people have been here 20-odd years and have bought in to what I expect, the values I try and bring and culture I try and create.

“Generally in this building people have come along on the journey and I’ve enjoyed it immensely.”

Mowbray’s next challenge will be to get Rovers in to a position where they can challenge to get back in the Premier League.

Many of the players from when he first took charge remain at the club, and the boss admits his first 15 games in charge gave him confidence in the group he inherited.

Rovers sit 14th in the Championship table with 13 games of the season remaining ahead of today’s trip to Birmingham.

Mowbray signed a new long-term deal at the club in November and is hoping to continue progressing the club.

He added: “I think the two years has gone in little blocks, the first 15-game block in which we didn’t quite achieve what we wanted to.

“We accrued a decent amount of points and that gave me the belief that the players at the club had the capability of doing well the following season which thankfully we did.

“They have all been given an opportunity in the Championship to show they can do better than the last time we were in the Championship and generally they have.

“We have to see this season, see how many points we accrue and where it takes us, and then from there we have to try and move it forward.

“If we feel there are players who haven’t dealt with the Championship as well as we had hoped then we have to try and strengthen and improve the team, improve the club.

“Hopefully in the next year or two we can get to a situation where we have an ambition and expectation in this league.”
