Tony Mowbray highlighted the impact of Adam Armstrong in Rovers’ win over Ipswich Town at Ewood Park.

That moves Rovers in to 10th in the Championship as they chalked up a third successive victory at the start of 2019.

Armstrong won the penalty, from which Danny Graham scored, before setting up the second for Joe Nuttall. Both goals came within a 10 minute spell in the second half, with Rovers holding out for back-to-back clean sheets.

“Adam is a young boy who we think is a snip for the money we got him for,” Mowbray said.

“We see huge potential in him. When he learns the game, when to run, when to stand, and as he develops he will be some asset.

“The speed and acceleration he brings to our team is crucial, particularly with Dack and Graham leading the line, we need that speed in behind from somewhere and Adam provides that.”

Mowbray felt an extra time FA Cup replay to defeat to Newcastle United played a part in a below-par first half showing where they created a number of chances, but couldn’t make them count.

Rovers looked more purposeful after the break and took the lead from the penalty spot before Nuttall scored with his first touch.

Mowbray added: “I think our intensity levels were down, I wasn’t very happy at half time. They weren’t very happy either.

“We were playing against a team who looked to play out from the back and I think if we had our normal intensity levels then we could have taken it off them a lot more and created a lot more chances.

“We could have been 2-0 up early on.

“But I think Tuesday night had a lot to do with that, 130 minutes in total we played against Newcastle.

“Several players were asked to go again, so I think that had a part to play in it.

“I’m pleased the substitutes came on and had an impact and affected the game in a positive way.

“I’m pleased with the points after a game in midweek when they went to extra time. I know we played against the team at the bottom of the league and who have struggled to win games this season but as we managed to do a couple of years ago, teams at the bottom find a way to start winning because of their extra desire and intensity.

“We had to make sure we matched all that and then you hope your quality can help make the difference.”

The second goal owed much to a quality pass from Elliott Bennett as Armstrong squared for the unmarked Nuttall.

“There wasn’t enough of that during the game,” Mowbray said.

“I get a bit frustrated at times with the tendency to over-hit Danny Graham and yet, we’ve talked about that. It works well for us so if it’s working keep doing it.

“Yet when it doesn’t work we have to put some passes together, bounce the ball off each other, get it to Bradley’s feet, get full backs overlapping, all of that stuff.

“The second goal was a bit of a combination of that, a great pass inside the full back a ball across the box and the finish.

“At the end of the day we’re happy with the points. They are potential banana skins, we had to match Ipswich’s desire and we managed to do that, got the points and move on to next week.”
