There might not be a league win on the board yet but Rovers boss Tony Mowbray believes his side have shown they can compete at Championship.

Rovers have opened their league account with back-to-back draws against Ipswich Town and Millwall.

They claimed a first clean sheet of the new campaign in Saturday’s goalless draw with the Lions at Ewood Park and were within seconds of an opening day win at Portman Road when they were denied by a freak equalising goal.

But Mowbray has seen positives from his side, who will look to get a first league victory under their belts when they head to Hull City on Saturday.

But the Ewood chief knows the sooner three points come his side’s way the better.

“They have felt they can compete and get the job done,” Mowbray said of his players.

“In the second half on Saturday, against a team who missed out on the play-offs on the last day, we showed we can compete and that should give them confidence and belief not to fear anyone in the division.

“The group’s mentality is good, I’ve talked about their spirit, but I hope they can take some confidence from those first two games.

“There isn’t anything to fear in the league.

“The teams we play a team who’s on fire and everything is clicking for them and we get beat then you put those days behind you and move on to the next one.

“As we’ve seen from the first two games we can compete in this division and we need to be really positive and look forward to every challenge.”

Three teams, Leeds United, Swansea and Aston Villa have won all of their opening two games.

Rovers play all three within their next 11 matches, with the home game with Villa on September 15 followed by three consecutive fixtures against well-fancied sides in Derby, Stoke and Nottingham Forest.

But Mowbray is excited by the prospect of taking on the league’s heavyweights as the season goes on to gauge what level his side is at.

He added: “Leeds have won a few games, Swansea as well, and we should be looking forward to those days to go and test ourselves and see how far we’ve got to go to be at the top of this division.

“Ultimately that’s the goal as we move forward.

“We have to build this club over a few transfer windows to be ultra-competitive to try and get out of this division.”
