Adam Armstrong insists he is capable of leading the line for Rovers after his double in the Carabao Cup win at Carlisle United.

Armstrong scored twice in Tuesday night’s 5-1 win taking his tally to 11 goals in 18 starts since joining the club on loan in January.

His move from Newcastle United has since been made permanent, with the cup tie at Brunton Park being his first start since securing a £1.75m return.

The England Under-21 international revealed he models his game on Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero and is keen to show that he can make the central striking role his own.

“I’ve played there all my life so I know what it’s about,” said Armstrong who has mainly been used in a wider role by Tony Mowbray.

“I know I’m not the biggest but I know how to make runs and when to come to feet.

“If you look at a lot of teams they have little lads up front who make good runs.

“I base my game around Aguero and watch what he’s doing. He’s doing it in the Premier League, the highest level and that’s where I want to get to one day and hopefully that’s with Blackburn.

“Wherever I get put I will give 100 per cent effort. That was an opportunity and I was happy to score twice.”

Danny Graham was given the night off, allowing Armstrong start in a central role, but that was just one of four changes made by the Rovers boss.

A strong Rovers side were 5-1 up by the 55th minute, with Armstrong taken off shortly afterwards, denying him the chance to get a hat-trick.

“It was a good performance from the lads. Our aim was to get the win and plenty of goals and we did that so credit to everyone,” he added after scoring his third brace in Rovers colours.

“The ball fell nicely to me in both positions and I managed to put them in the back of the net.

“I would have been happy to stay on but it’s about getting the rest in, recover right, and be ready to go again at the weekend. “

Bradley Dack also scored twice in the 5-1 win, and created both of Armstrong’s goals with excellent through-balls.

The pair continued where they left off while Armstrong was on loan, showing good link-up play and both finding the back of the net.

“You saw what he was capable of with his performances last season,” the 21-year-old said of Dack.

“I have played a lot with him now and I know when he’s going to do things.

“I enjoy linking up with him.”

Rovers head to Hull City on Saturday looking to get their first league win under their belt after successive draws on their Championship return.

Before that, they will learn their second round opponents for the Carabao Cup in tonight’s 7pm draw.

So would Newcastle United away be the perfect tie for the boyhood Magpie?

“I would love that – but it is what is it,” Armstrong added.

“A Premier League club would be nice but we’ll try and get through no matter what.”

With a first win of the season under their belts, Armstrong admits Rovers are ready to earn a first three points of the season when they travel to the KCOM Stadium.

“Confidence is high.

“Over the last three games we’ve played some good football.

“Hopefully we can get the three points going in to the next one.”
