Dominic Samuel says Rovers can take plenty on board from their pre-season friendly defeat to Liverpool.

The forward was the only player to come through 90 minutes on his second outing of the close season, operating on the right hand side of an attacking three.

He went closest for Rovers, seeing a first-half strike saved by the legs of Lorius Karius as Rovers battled hard for the opening hour.

The visitors’ quality told thereafter, but asked for his assessment of the game, Samuel said: “It shows what needs to be done to get to the top level playing against world class players.

“I think we had a good chance in the first hour but they just had the better quality in the final third knowing when to pass and when to pass.

“It was a good test but once that we will learn from.

“If you want to be at the top then you have to learn from playing against these types of teams and we will go through and see what needs to be worked on.

“Even though it was a pre-season game teams like that will come and press you all over the pitch.

“It shows the stuff you need to work on to get to where they are.

“They are a Premier League team, one of the best teams in the world with some of the best players in the world so they are the ones you want to be learning from and take it on board.”

Rovers were forced in to plenty of work without the ball, with Samuel believing that to be beneficial ahead of the new season.

He added: “There will be times like that where we need to sit off and wait for the right time to counter and try and win the ball back.

“We can work on that training and learn from that to take in to the Championship.”
