Former Rovers loanee Marcus Antonsson says it was an ‘easy decision’ to return to his native Sweden after signing for Malmö FF.

Antonsson spent two years in England, the final 12 months at Rovers during a season-long loan spell in which he scored eight times, before opting to leave Leeds United.

An ankle injury sustained in the 2-2 draw with Scunthorpe United on December 30 proved difficult to overcome and the 27-year-old never rediscovered the form which saw him named League One PFA player of the month for November.

Antonsson played 34 times for Rovers last season, and despite an agreement in his loan contract which could have seen the move made permanent for a fee in the region of £1million, that was never taken up.

And Antonsson said: “It feels good to come to a club like Malmö FF.

“There are few things done and when MFF came into the picture, it was an easy decision.

“I'm a central striker who loves to run in behind the back line.

“I have a good season behind me and come here with great confidence.

“Now I'm looking forward to the challenges waiting and playing for all MFF supporters.”

Antonsson moved to Elland Road in the summer of 2016 from Kalmar where he had been prolific in Swedish football.

But the move never quite worked out for the Swede who started just six league games for Leeds, scoring one, before being loaned out.

He will join up with his new team-mates this week and look to help Malmo move up the standings, currently sitting seventh with just five wins from their opening 14 matches.
