ACCRINGTON'S Steve Johnson has won the SD34 Motorsport Championship.
And when the 48-year-old driver was informed of the result by the Lancashire Telegraph he said he was "delighted".
"It's fantastic news, just a fantastic result," he said.
For Johnson the win came after a mighty gamble, which saw him sit out the final race of the Championship when he was ahead by just two points.
Luckily his main challenger, Gary Jakeman, also amazingly chose to sit out the event in Bolton-le-Moors, leaving Johnson the clear winner.
The season began at the end of December last year and, by May, he was flying high.
But a back injury temporarily put the brakes on his challenge.
Luckily he made a full recovery and, by September, he was back in the driving seat, still ahead, but only just.
He added: "This is a brilliant outcome considering at one stage this year I could hardly walk."
He would like to thank Phoenix Motorsport in Accrington and Protec Workwear in Preston.
