Blackburn Hawks received a huge confidence boost as they overpowered Paisley Pirates 8-1 at the Arena.

The result gave Hawks, now just four points from the qualifying top four, a glimmer of hope in the tough Northern League Ice Hockey Cup competition.

General manager Graham Lomax insisted that the result was as comprehensive as the result suggested.

"It was a well deserved victory," said Lomax. "We played very well indeed and could have easily scored more and we were very unlucky not to get a shut-out.

"Peter Tapp did a great job on his return and even bagged a goal. We have a two-week break now which is a shame because everyone is on a high after the win."

Senior duo Ricci Hulme and Dan Fearon have both been released by Hawks. The management decided that it was unfair to hold on to the pair while they were not getting much ice time.

Lomax said: "It not easy releasing players. We are very grateful for all their patience and effort for the club. We felt it was unfair to drag them to every game and not give them much time on the ice.

"There are juniors at the club who are prepared to play that role."

Despite the exits, Lomax admitted Hawks would not be moving for other players unless they will genuinely strengthen the first team.

"We are not particularly looking to add to the squad.

"It all depends on what becomes available. However, we will not be moving for anyone who would force any of the juniors out of the first team set-up."
