AFTER coming face-to-face with an intruder, most of us would panic.
But Simon Jayne had presence of mind.
Looking into the burglar’s eyes, he came up with a solution.
Mr Jayne took a nailgun and fired 12 nails into a wooden door. It was the only exit and the intruder was trapped.
Minutes later, police arrived and arrested the man.
This week, just three days after the burglary, he pleaded guilty to the crime.
Mr Jayne was heralded by the police for his actions. And he certainly deserves praise.
Tackling intruders is a contentious issue, with many feeling that the law does not offer enough protection to house or business holders.
In the split second that you catch someone on your property, it is hard to deliver a response that will be judged as proportionate by the courts months later.
That is why Mr Jayne’s actions were so intelligent.
He did not tackle or confront the burglar, putting himself at risk of prosecution.
Mr Jayne kept himself at a safe distance, and trapped the intruder.
And thanks to that, a burglar is off our streets. Well done, Mr Jayne.
