The recent New Years Honours. I thought we did well in our area this time, and why shouldn’t we?

Peter Holland, the Chief Fire and Rescue Officer got awarded with a CBE for his work to vastly improve our fire and general safety across the County and, I hope, for his lead on the Princes Trust work here that benefits many youngsters every year.

John Smith, just retiring, but certainly not shy, Principal of Burnley College, brought opportunity to learners across his locality with an OBE.

MBEs went to the Rev Mike Wedgeworth now of the Cathedral, but also my predecessor as Chair of Blackburn College, Hyndburn Council and before that working in the ravaged coal industry and communities of South Yorkshire.

And my pal Eileen Entwistle who has served the people as a ward councillor for 20 or more years was also honoured. No case was too small or no challenge too big for Eileen, she just got on with it. Perhaps we need more local elected members with the commitment Eileen has consistently demonstrated?

And finally of those who I’ve met, footballer Jason Roberts of the Rovers for his charitable foundation work. I guess most of us think that footballers earn a lot...But here’s one giving something back to different communities.

I say well done to you all and have done directly. But I bet not everyone will agree. But what are you going to do about it?

Anyone can nominate anyone. You can do so by visiting the DirectGov website.

Why not nominate someone from your community?
