JACK Straw (LT, July 20) said that he wanted a real argument about English laws, English votes.

Jack Straw and New Labour have studiously avoided even saying the word "England" ever since devolution for Wales and Scotland.

In fact, over the last 10 years, members of the public who have tried to engage politicians on this issue have been shouted down and accused of every crime against humanity, ie bigotry, racism, xenophobia and fanning the flames of English nationalism.

Jack Straw accused the English of being violent. I don't know how he can bring himself to debate with these nasty English types.

As a long-time campaigner for an English Parliament, I agree with Straw that the Conservative answer to the West Lothian question of English votes on English laws is unworkable.

The obvious answer is an English Parliament. An English Parliament will not stop Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish MPs having a say in Britain's affairs. Jack Straw is well aware of recent CM opinion polls of 31 percent and 41 per cent of people in England who would like English independence.

Inaction by this Government will bring about the end of the UK. They will have no one to blame but themselves should this occur.
