The election outcome was not exactly what I would have wanted but, if it has created a ‘nightmare scenario’ for Coun Mulla (Letters, May 14) and his friends, it was probably worth it. For the rest of us, our nightmare ended with the departure of Gordon Brown and his crew. Coun Mulla, in his rose-tinted Labour specs, denounced the Lib-Dems for selling their souls to the highest bidder, which is extremely rich coming from a section of our community that constantly criticised Labour’s wars yet continued to support the guilty party.

He then displayed the typical class view of Labour’s misguided infantry, ignoring the fact that what is left of the party is now led by that well-known toff, Harriet Harman, and that dozens of Labour MPs were privately educated and could never be described as working class.

Agreed, there are some members of the new Cabinet who were born into affluent families and could probably have afforded a life of idle leisure. Instead they have chosen to offer themselves for election and to work for a better Britain for all, even those with as limited a view as Coun Mulla.

Regarding the huge mess he thinks they will make, they needn’t bother. Gordon Brown has already made it for them.

How can he hope for the start of a Labour fightback on behalf of the decent majority when the same people have just made it crystal clear they have had all they can take of his party?

Brian Gordon, Conservative councillor, Meadowhead Ward.
