THE council has embarked on a safety campaign in Darwen old cemetery which entails laying down headstones of any graves that are leaning, which seems a reasonable precaution.

However, it doesn't appear to know when to stop. I was walking through on Sunday and noticed the next batch of condemned graves marked up with red tape.

They look perfectly upright and have been there since the 19th century or before. This goes beyond being sensible, it is destroying the heritage of the town. Parts of the cemetery now look like they have been subjected to a nuclear blast with whole areas knocked over.

It is disgraceful that the council is destroying the graves that have stood for over 100 years commemorating people that shaped the town. They now lie flattened as a testament to our 21st century obsession with health and safety - what a terrible legacy.
