USERS of an under-threat Blackburn leisure centre are to be asked how much they would be willing to pay to keep it open.

Shadsworth Leisure Centre has been earmarked for closure as part of Blackburn with Darwen’s £4million cost-cutting plans.

Campaigners fighting to save the facility have now met council bosses in an attempt to strike a deal.

They were told the centre was losing more than £308,000 a year.

Terry Moorby, a volunteer archery instructor who is leading the campaign, said people were enthusiastic about paying for the facilities, most of which are currently free.

He said: “We need to find a suitable charge.”

The campaigners could have to raise the money by the end of August, he added.
