POLICE have confirmed that a 75-year-old, knocked down in Blackburn on Wednesday, has not sustained life-threatening injuries.

The man, from the Ewood area, was crossing Bolton Road at the Livesey Branch Road junction when he was hit by a white Peugeot van at about 1.35pm.

He is being treated for a broken leg at the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

The man has still not yet been named by police.

Phyllis Cunliffe, 83, who lives in Bolton Road, saw the after-math of the accident.

She said: “I was looking out of my window and saw the man lying on the road.

"I thought ‘Oh my God, no!’ “He had a medic with him who had come in a car.

"Two men from the Rovers who I've seen about stayed with the man.

"One started to direct the traffic and they called for an ambulance.

“The man was lying very still and seemed to be unconscious. The men around him covered him with their jackets.

“It was all a bit long for me before the ambulance came – the men were on their mobiles trying to find out where it was.

“This part of the road is usually pretty good on match day with the police around.

"But it frightens me to see people darting across the road while the lights change. I wait forever to cross.

“I think they should put another speed camera in here. I'm surprised this hasn't happ-ened before.”

Ewood’s councillor Maureen Bateson said that she was sad to hear the news.

She said: “The road is very busy and people do speed up there, but there are a lot of precautions put in to help people crossing the road, and I wouldn’t say that it’s an accident blackspot.

"I urge people to use the crossings properly and don’t take any risks.”

The road was closed for about 30 minutes while police recovered the vehicle, causing long traffic delays in the area.

Police are appealing for any witneses to contact them on 0845 125 3545.
