A WOMAN fighting cancer for the second time is fundraising to improve the area’s main chemotherapy unit.

Elaine Bevan, 50, who has worked for Pendle Council and Liberata as a cleaning supervisor for 20 years, says patients are desperate to see an improvement in the facilities.

She has now organised a charity pamper day with the help of her beautician daughter Keeley. On Wednesday, Keeley is offering a range of treatments to Pendle Council and Liberata staff – for a donation to Burnley General Hospital’s chemotherapy unit where Elaine is a regular visitor.

And she’s keen to raise money to help improve it.

Elaine said: “It’s not very nice at the moment with an old black and white TV that doesn’t work very well.

“I’d like to buy them a new TV, as well as a new chair for patients or some essential medical equipment. I really want to do something that will benefit other people going through the same as me. If I can make a difference, then I’ll be happy.”

Elaine faced breast cancer for the first time eight years ago. Now it’s returned in her other breast, as well as in her skin and her windpipe.

Coun Joe Cooney, leader of Pendle Council, said: “Our staff are such a charitable lot and have been supporting Elaine’s fundraising efforts.

“So many people have been touched by cancer.

“It’s such a worthy cause and I wish Elaine well in her fundraising.” Staff at the Council and Liberata have already supported a Wear A Scarf to Work day. ‘Chatty’ human resources assistant Rachel Birkett also did a sponsored silence, raising £350, and Elaine and her friends have held events including a cream tea.

Elaine’s sister, Anita, ran this year’s Race for Life in Portsmouth, raising £238. And Barnfield Construction has donated £100.

Elaine’s current fundraising total stands close to £1,000.
