REVELLERS in Bolton have been warned they could end up in jail if their New Year’s Eve celebrations involve them in drunken antisocial behaviour.

Yobbish behaviour such as vandalism, swearing and acting aggressively will be dealt with strongly, police have warned.

Chief Supt David Hull, head of police in Bolton, said: “Having a drink or two, letting your hair down with friends and enjoying the vibrant nightlife our town offers is part and parcel of many people’s festive celebrations.

“We are happy to play our role in this by looking out for people and ensuring they get home safely.

“Part of this is robustly tackling the selfish binge-drinking minority who get involved in drunken violence and anti-social behaviour such as swearing, shouting and criminal damage.

“They can be assured we will be watching out for them and will have no hesitation in ‘putting them up’ for the night.”

Partygoers are advised by police to visit a new website — drunken disorderlyinn.com — before going out.

Chief Supt Hull said: “Although it is tonguein- cheek, it carries a serious message highlighting the cold, stark experience of being taken into custody and how it can damage your reputation, relationships and work prospects. Please enjoy yourself and stay safe this New Year’s Eve and remember it’s your night out and your choice. Don’t spend it with us.”

● Just five arrests were made on Christmas Eve, which this year coincided with “Mad Friday”, traditionally the busiest evening for pubs and clubs. The North West Ambulance Service said calls between midnight and 4am were down 28 per cent from the previous Friday.
