LITTLE Khloe Briggs was in no mood to wait around for the luxuries of Blackburn’s new birthing centre — becoming the first baby to be born in an ambulance on the unit’s car park.

Kelly Armer, 29, from Abbeydale Way, Oswaldtwistle, was looking forward to the birth of her first child when she woke up experiencing severe labour pains, leaving her partner Paul Briggs, 34 in a panic.

He said: “Kelly was on the bed screaming in pain and couldn’t seem to move.

“I was on the phone to my mum, Margaret, and we worked out that the contractions were about two minutes apart.

"It wasn’t long after that I realised that part of the baby’s head was exposed.”

At this point the couple decided it was certainly time to call for an ambulance to take them to Blackburn Birthing Centre in Park Lee Road.

He said: “I was on the phone to NHS Direct. I told them I was an electrician not a midwife but they were very calm and just said that if Kelly wanted to push she should.”

Minutes later, with Paul following, the ambulance arrived at the centre but there was no time for the expectant mother to use the newly built facilities, which opened last September.

Kelly, who is a nursery manager for Sure Start Hyndburn, said: “The ambulance reversed to the doors but at that point two midwives ran in.

"It was only a few minutes later that Khloe was born, we never even got out of the ambulance.

“It was very scary and everything happened in just over an hour but I was treated brilliantly by everyone involved.

“One of the midwives told me she’s the first they’ve had born on the car park.”

She was born at 9.42am on Sunday.

Once inside, Khloe was weighed at 6lbs 5oz and mum and baby spent their first night at the centre before returning home.

“She’s beautiful, everything we’ve hoped for”, said Kelly.

“I’m sure when she grows up we’ll be telling her the tale of what a hurry she was in the day she was born.”
