A NEW High Sheriff of Lancashire has been appointed.

Peter Mileham replaces Dennis Mendoros, one of Lancashire’s most prominent businessmen.

The county’s High Sheriff fills a role that stretches back to at least the 10th century.

High Sheriffs play an ambassadorial role, touring Lancashire and acting as the Queen’s representative in the county.

Mr Mileham, a former national president of British Chambers of Commerce, said: “I’ve lived and worked in Lancashire most of my life. It’s tremendous to be invited to take up the role of High Sheriff.

“This is an ancient role steeped in history and tradition and I am hon-oured to be part of it.

“I will of course be keen to support the county council, organisations and unsung heroes who make our county the vibrant place it is today.

“As a former businessman, I'm also keen to ensure Lancashire remains a thriving business centre.

"I want to do all I can to encourage young people into business.”

Mr Mileham, who lives in Preston, will be sworn in during a ceremony at County Hall, Preston, on April 12.

Mr Mendoros, manag-ing director of Kelbrook-based Euravia, grew up in the Sudan and moved to Lancashire in the 1980s after being lured by aerospace companies.
