THE launch event of an appeal to refurbish Blackburn Cathedral at a cost of £1.5 million is to take place tonight.

Plans will see the landmark building in the heart of town highlighted with an ambitious floodlighting scheme.

The Diocese of Blackburn also said the cathedral is also in urgent need of rewiring after 50 years.

In addition, the scheme includes a refurbishment of the Jesus Chapel, replacement of seating throughout with wooden chairs and a complete revamp of the crypt area involving the café and kitchens.

The aim is to refurbish the interior fabric of the building as well as making substantial improvements to the outside precinct.

The Dean, the Very Rev Christopher Armstrong, said yesterday that although the building as a whole had been well maintained and cared for over the years, it still needed constant attention.

He said: “The most urgent work is to ensure that the building is in a condition appropriate for Lancashire’s only Anglican cathedral and fit for inclusive participation by all.”

A launch dinner takes place tonight in London at Speaker’s House.
