A SERIOUS car accident on the A56 near Accrington caused Friday afternoon traffic misery.

The crash, near junction eight of the M65, meant gridlock, with traffic grinding to a halt as far away as Haslingden.

The incident happened as a blue Fiat Punto, travelling north on the A56 after leaving the Edenfield bypass, hit a road sign.

Emergency services were called at 12.07pm.

The elderly male driver, who has not been named, had to be cut from the car by fire crews, but was fully conscious throughout the procedure, emergency services said.

His female passenger, believed by police to be his wife, was not seriously hurt either, and was able to leave the car without the aid of cutting equipment.

The couple were taken to Burnley General Hospital where they received treatment for minor injuries.
