A WOMAN suffered major burns to her upper body after being set on fire with petrol in Blackburn.
A man was arrested after the woman was found with 60 per cent burns inside the kitchen of a house in Fielding Crescent, Mill Hill.
He was released on bail pending further inquiries.
Detectives have been unable to speak to the woman due to her injuries or establish whether the injuries were self-inflicted.
The woman, 32, was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital but was later transferred to the Royal Edinburgh Hospital's specialist burns unit.
Police said that her injuries were not life-threatening but that she faced living with severe scars.
A spokesman for the ambulance service said another person was taken to Royal Blackburn with burns to their hands.
The incident happened on Sunday night but police have only just released the full details.
Det Sgt Paul Ryan, of Blackburn CID, said: "She has 60 per cent burns on her upper body.
"Inquiries are ongoing into how she came by her injuries. It is too early to say exactly what happened."
A fire service spokesman said the kitchen was damaged and firefighters spent 45 minutes at the scene.
