A COUNCILLOR from the Ribble Valley has become the new chairman of Lancashire County Council.

Chris Holtom has taken the ceremonial role which is the county council's version of mayor.

Coun Holtom, who represents Ribble Valley South West for the county council, said his aims were promoting tourism, championing the work of voluntary and community groups and supporting events to celebrate the county's rich history.

He said: "It is a tremendous honour to be named as the new chairman of Lancashire County Council."

Coun Holtom has served as a county councillor for 21 years.

He was also Ribble Valley borough councillor for 24 years until his retirement three years ago.

During this time he was both council leader and mayor.

He is also an honorary alderman of the Ribble Valley.

Now in his role as chairman he will welcome official visitors to Lancashire, represent the county council at events and chair meetings of the full council.

Coun Holtom said: "During my year in office, I want to encourage people in the voluntary and community sectors to continue the good work they do serving the people of Lancashire.

"They work hard to serve people from all backgrounds and their contribution to life in Lancashire should not go unnoticed.

"I also want to encourage tourism in the county and support events like Real Lancashire Day, which showcase what our wonderful county is all about.

"I'm also looking forward to meeting and strengthening relationships with visitors from other countries that work closely with us.

"County councillor Tony Jones, the outgoing chairman, has done a superb job in promoting the county over the past year and I'd like to thank him for all his hard work."
