A BLACKBURN shop could lose its licence after being caught selling alcohol to under-age girls.

Two teenage test purchasers were able to buy two bottles of WKD from one out of the 12 shops visited by police and Trading Standards.

The action came at the weekend as part of a crackdown on under-age drinking in the borough.

PC Andy Duxbury said: “I am pleased with the latest results although it is disappointing that one shop let the others down.

“We will continue to carry out similar operations with the council over the coming months and will take robust action against anyone caught selling alcohol to under-18s.”

“The licensee will now be quizzed by officers and could face a licence review.

"The shop’s identity is not being revealed until a decision is made on whether to take further action."

Adam Scott, Blackburn with Darwen director of regeneration and environment, said: “The positive results we had from the majority of off-licences makes it clear that individuals and businesses are starting to take heed of their roles and responsibilities under the law, and as members of their local community.

“This type of operation is a vital part of helping to ensure young people stay safe and anti-social behaviour is reduced I hope this action sends a clear warning to other shopkeepers.”
