A QUICK-thinking cafe manager who saved a baby’s life by giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation has been praised by police.
By the time officers arrived at Massarella Cafe, Burnley, manager Donna Hinchcliffe had already administered the emergency first aid.
The mum-of-one was called into action when the 11-week-old infant stopped breathing after being fed by his mum at 12.30pm on Monday.
Donna, 28, of Accrington, said she put her first aid training into practice after the child’s mum shouted for help.
She said: “The company trains everyone in first aid. You don’t expect to have to use it but it was one of those things that needed doing.
“I was first on the scene, so I got on with it and did the best I could. Thankfully I revived him.
“I felt in a state of shock after it happened. Now everybody keeps asking me about it I keep getting a bit upset.”
Following the incident the baby was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital by ambulance.
Yesterday, the child’s mum said he was back at home and perfectly fine, but declined to comment further.
Inspector Mark Baines, of Burnley Police, said: “This must have been an absolutely terrifying incident for the mother but fortunately help was close at hand in the form of Donna.
“Her quick thinking probably helped to save the baby’s life and I commend her brave actions.
“Now the initial trauma of the incident is over, we of course, wish mum and baby well in the future.”
Massarella Cafe is situated in Market Sqaure, Charter Walk Shopping Centre.
Donna has worked at the Burnley cafe for three years, and for four years at the company.
