POLICE in rural Rossendale are urging dog walkers to make sure they keep their pets under control when walking through the countryside.

It follows a report that three sheep were mauled by a dog at a farm in Helmshore sometime between Friday and Saturday April 2 and 3, receiving such severe injuries they had to be destroyed.

PC Brent Clarke, from Rossendale Police, said dogs should be kept under control, particularly during lambing season. He said: “Signs are up on the footpaths requesting dog owners keep their dogs on the leads, but clearly some owners are either choosing to ignore these signs or dogs are getting loose.

“My message to dog owners is this – please keep your dog on a lead when required to do so and keep control of your pet at all times.”
