MORE than 4,400 homes in Burnley are set to be fitted with free carbon monoxide detectors by a landlord.
People living in Calico homes will receive the device over the next 12 months from the owners of Burnley’s former council housing stock.
The move will help to avoid deaths like that of 75-year-old Elizabeth Mulrooney, who died after he flue became blocked in August 2008.
The grandmother was overcome by carbon monoxide fumes in the living room of her Haven Street home.
Speaking about the Calico programme, investment head Adele Livesey said: “These detectors will be fitted during every annual gas visit we make, in addition to the free gas safety checks we carry out to each home during the year. The detectors are maintenance free and will be fitted in a location close to gas appliances.
“Once installed, they will help improve the safety of our customers’ homes by alerting them to the any potential danger of carbon monoxide.”
According to the Health and Safety Executive around 20 people each year die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas appliances and flues not being properly installed or maintained.
