AN arts extravaganza comes to Ribble Valley in May, with a month-long celebration of art, music and theatre.

Throughout May, the borough will host seven festivals, as well as a feast of exhibitions and family events, culminating in the Clitheroe Castle Family Week Picnic.

Thousands of picnickers are expected to converge on Clitheroe Castle on Spring Bank Holiday Monday for the picnic, which is one of eight flagship picnics from among hundreds across the country marking the start of National Family Week 2010.

The event is supported by the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourist Board, the Ribble Valley Strategic Partnership, the Grand and the Ribble Valley Council for Voluntary Service.

Other highlights of the MayFest include the Ribble Valley Jazz Festival, featuring Jacqui Dankworth and Cuban violin maestro Omar Puente at the Grand, and the Into the Valley Festival, featuring a feast of music.

Coun Robert Thompson, chairman of Ribble Valley Council’s community committee, said: “We are looking forward to an exciting, vibrant month, culminating in the superb Clitheroe Castle Family Week Picnic.”
