A FUN DAY football competition in Brierfield has been renamed in honour of a councillor who died while out walking.

As part of the Heyhead Park fun day organisers have decided to hold a tournament tribute to Bill Clegg, who was described as Mr Brierfield.

Coun Clegg, 75, who represented Reedley ward, died in February while on a regular seven-mile ramble with his wife, Joan, and friends.

And today Coun Tonia Barton, chairman of the Brierfield and Reedley committee, said she was touched the competition would honour his memory.

Coun Barton said: "Bill was an active supporter of Heyhead Park and lived opposite it.

"I think it is absolutely lovely and it shows what people of Brierfield thought of Bill.

"He was an absolutely lovely man; hard working, and he cared about what happened in Brierfield.

"What he did not know about Brierfield was not worth knowing about.

"When he passed away someone referred to him Mr Brierfield and he has been badly missed."

The competition will form part of the sixth annual event which is being held between 11am and 4pm on Saturday.

Coun Clegg, who lived in Park Lane, was also a member of the town council for many years and became the third member of his family to become Brierfield's Mayor when he took the chains of office in 2001.

In May's local elections his seat on Pendle Council was won by his wife.

Coun Clegg, was was also a keen Nelson FC supporter and was one of the main driving forces behind the fun day, which will also feature a tennis competition, fair rides, face painting and charity stalls.

Coun Barton said she hoped as many people was possible would honour her former colleague.

She added: "I hope that we can get a great attendance and help strengthen the wonderful community spirit we already have in Brierfield."
