YOUNGSTERS in Barnoldswick are celebrating after the re-opening of two new playgrounds.

Pendle Council has spent £110,000 upgrading the ageing facilities at the play areas in Harrison Street and Bank Street.

And now youngsters will be really able to get into the swing of things when the areas are officially opened tomorrow.

Craven ward councillor and executive member for resources, Coun David Whipp, said the new modern playgrounds would be a great boost for the area.

He said: "They were built about 16 or 17 years ago and despite a great deal of tender loving care they were in need of an upgrade.

"The children are absolutely delighted with the new facilities and we have had lots of positive comments from parents about the work.

"One parent told us their three year old toddler used to call the Bank Street area the rubbish playground."

The areas will be officially opened by deputy mayor and Coates ward member, Coun Allan Buck, at a special ceremony tomorrow.

The playgrounds have been closed for several months while work to replace ageing rides with modern facilities.

Children were consulted about what attractions they wanted in the areas.

As well as traditional slides and swings there playgrounds will now also have climbing frames and equipment now has a lattice effect rather than large surfaces to minimise graffiti.

Coun Whipp said the council would continue to improve play facilities for youngsters across Pendle.

He said: "As a council we set about renewing and rejeuvenating play areas and we will continue to do that."
