TRAFFIC on the M65 between Burnley and Brierfield will be disrupted by roadworks which are set to start on Monday.

And the resurfacing work will be carried out by Aggregate Industries Ltd every day for the following five weeks.

However, council bosses say they will do their best to keep disruption to a minimum by working overnight.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "This particular section of the M65 is over 25 years old and needs a new surface.

"These works have the potential to cause delays and disruption to traffic."

The works will include the cleaning of the drainage system, removal of the existing surface, resurfacing with a single course "low noise" surface and the renewal of road markings.

The spokesman added: "A contra flow traffic system will be in operation. This requires one or more traffic lanes to switch from one carriageway to the other by crossing the central reservation. By using the hard shoulders as 'running lanes' it will be possible to maintain two lanes in each direction.

"It will be necessary to close the westbound carriageway completely to allow the inside lane to be resurfaced safely along with associated closures of the slip roads at junctions 10, 11 and 12 for short periods during the works.

"These closures will be limited to overnight closures or weekend closures (7pm Friday to 6.30am Monday) as necessary."

A 50mph mandatory speed limit will be imposed for the duration of the works and traffic will be encouraged to stay on the motorway system, with diversions not specifically signed.
