RESIDENTS who called for an eyesore block of flats to be demolished are now complaining about plans to build houses in their place.

Proposals have been submitted by A&J Todd Construction Ltd from Cliviger to build six three-storey houses, each including a driveway and garage on the site of former shops and flats at Calderbrook Avenue in Burnley.

But objections have been received by neighbours of the proposed development who believe the houses would be far too close to their properties, obstructing their outlook and privacy. Murial Tew, who lives on Calderbrook Avenue, said: "We know there is going to be building there, that's been known all along, but it's how they are going to be built.

"These are going to be three-storey properties all in a line. They will be looming over us and overlooking our properties.

"We just want some compromise by maybe building them further back.

"We're not objecting to them being built, what we're objecting to is the style and how close they are to our homes." Further objections have been made on the grounds that the grass strips to the front are too narrow and there would be an increase in traffic.

The rundown flats and shops, which were a magnet for drug-dealing and arsonists, were finally demolished earlier this year after a long campaign by residents.

Over a year ago the shops were targeted in an arson attack which gutted a hairdressers.

Outline planning permission has already been granted to build on the site. But according to the papers: "Upon receipt of this application it became apparent that the siting of the proposed townhouses to that approved with outline consent.

"After speaking to the applicant, it was decided that the application be decided as a full application."

The application will be decided at a meeting of the development and control committee tomorrow where it has been recommended for approval.
