AN investigation was underway today after a mysterious hole appeared suddenly in a Burnley street.

Albion Street, Rosehill, was closed to traffic after the discovery of the hole yesterday afternoon by a member of the public and council engineers were called in.

A Burnley Council spokesman said: "The matter was reported by a member of the public and it is being investigated as a matter of urgency by staff from the council and United Utilities.

"It's not clear yet what's caused the hole to appear.

"Once we've established that, repairs will be started as soon as possible.

"It is likely that traffic along that stretch will be restricted, or temporarily stopped altogether, while the work goes ahead.

"The road is not a bus route so public transport won't be affected."
