The Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Sharon Davies, has announced the setting up of a disaster Relief Fund to assist victims of the earthquake.

She said: "My heartfelt sympathy goes out to those who have been bereaved and injured by the tragedy.

"I am conscious that many of our citizens in Pendle originate from the devastated area and that their immediate concerns will be for relatives and loved ones.

"I share their concerns and believe that the world must unite to act swiftly to relieve as much distress as possible.

"To this end I am announcing the setting up of a disaster relief fund that all people of Pendle can donate to.

"A book of condolences will also be open in the Town Hall at Nelson and the Council Office in Brierfield for local people to sign and express their personal condolences

"Watching the first reports on television from the devastated area was heartbreaking. I saw many places that I had visited personally, though they were hardly recognisable now.

"On my visit, a few years ago, I was so impressed by the resilience and fortitude of the people there, and their ability to endure suffering and hardship and yet to offer such warm hospitality.

"I am certain that the spirit of the people, who have already suffered so much, will overcome this tragedy. But they need our help now. They need the help of the international community."

The Chairman of the Pendle-based Kashmir Welfare Association, Mr Abdullah Zaid, has welcomed the Mayor of Pendles action in setting up a Disaster Relief Fund.

He said: "The people of Azad Kashmir have suffered much over the last fifty years. This added burden will only lead to yet more suffering. I welcome the swift action to help from the Mayor and people of our adopted town."
