IRISH midfielder James O'Connor has high hopes that Burnley can build on Tuesday's stunning 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

O'Connor's fluky opener against the Tractor Boys signalled a welcome change in fortune for the Clarets, who have been dogged by bad luck and injuries since the summer.

And the former West Bromwich Albion ace reckons that missing ingredient could now be the catalyst to kick-start a surge up the Championship table.

He said: "Clearly we had a little bit of luck with the first goal, but no-one can deny that we've had precious little luck so far this season and that's all we've been missing really.

"I actually thought my shot was flying into the top corner anyway before it hit their player, but in most of the games we've played we've done enough to get something and just been unfortunate, so maybe that deserved three points will signal a change in fortune now.

"I think everybody needed that win, from the manager and the players right through to the supporters, who were terrific on Tuesday night.

"Hopefully that will help us pick up now because as much as we have been unlucky, that can become a habit and you can quickly get into a rut."

O'Connor admitted the Clarets dressing room was a sombre place on Tuesday after learning that goalkeeper Danny Coyne will miss the rest of the season with cruciate and medial knee ligament damage.

And he dedicated the second league win of the season to the Welsh stopper, who faces at least a month in a leg brace before surgeons can operate.

O'Connor, 26, added: "It's been a tough week after learning that Danny will miss the rest of the season and all the lads were so disappointed for him before Tuesday's game.

"That's two massive blows now along with Wayne Thomas, but we still have a job to do as professional footballers and we showed our true colours by putting that behind us and putting in such a good all-round performance against Ipswich.

"It was a great win and just what we needed ahead of a tough game at Wolves tomorrow night. They are coming off a 4-0 win at Crewe after a bit of a blip, but we've had a good win too and so we're looking forward to it."

Meanwhile, the Clarets today refuted tabloid reports suggesting they are set to re-sign free agent Tony Grant.
