THE vast majority of people I have talked to in Halton, Slyne, Torrisholme, Beaumont and Lancaster - including regular commuters and truck drivers - oppose the Northern link road option.

And more than 95 per cent of the people I have approached in my neighbourhood in Bowerham have signed a petition to oppose this monstrous road.

There are plenty of alternative solutions to reduce traffic problems. Spreading tarmac over miles of the most beautiful countryside in the district is not the sensible answer.

With the current road system, the main Lancaster-to-Morecambe road gets congested because two of the three lanes on the Greyhound bridge converge to one-lane. There is enough room on that road to fit two lanes, reducing the queues considerably.

The county council should at least try this, even if it means reducing the width of the pavements.

On the same road back into Lancaster, the bus lane is largely empty while all of the other trucks and cars have to squeeze into one lane, resulting in queues in that direction too. Why cannot the congested single lane be relieved by putting heavy goods vehicles on the empty bus lane?

The orange route proposal is the worst plan I have ever seen and should be scrapped immediately.

It causes immense damage and destruction to the environment and wildlife, spoils the peace and tranquillity of everyone in the vicinity and will also cost taxpayers a fortune largely against their will.
