I FULLY support the Western Bypass.

I have spent the last three years travelling to university in Preston and it has never failed to take at least 20 minutes from home in the West End of Morecambe to the motorway via Torrisholme and Skerton - I gave up the main route a long time ago as you get stuck there for hours.

Coming home I completely avoid Lancaster by driving to the next junction and driving via Carnforth.

Other people most certainly take these alternative routes as a diversion from the main Lancaster road because the queues at peak times are appalling.

Why did I choose to study law in Preston? Because I had studied previously at Lancaster University for a year and had to endure the masses of traffic going in and out of the city. The university is just eight miles from my home but at times it took me 90 minutes to get there. It is quicker to go to Preston.

I believe people making the decisions about a link road must all live within walking distance of Lancaster Town Hall because they appear oblivious to the traffic.

Have they not seen the queues of people trying to get into Lancaster every morning from the motorway junctions? I have and they look thoroughly depressed, including truck drivers who want to get to Heysham port but are being made to pass through the city, which is preposterous.

Jim Catterall, a leading Morecambe hotelier quoted in the June 22 issue of the Citizen, was quite right about how the Western link road is key to the future of Morecambe tourism.

The bottom line is that while we are controlled by Lancaster City Council the link road will be pushed to the back of the agenda because it is a problem that affects Morecambrians only.

If we are to bring the resort back to life alongside the renaissance of the Midland Hotel, a Morecambe Council must be a priority because there is a multitude of evidence stacked up over many years that Lancaster City Council has been detrimental to Morecambe.
