WITH reference to the article 'School's fury over scuppered sports day' (LET, July 1), as a parent of a child that attends Kelsall Avenue nursery school I feel saddened and disheartened with the closure of the nursery school.

I am not against change but I do feel that the existing nursery school site would be a better place for the children's centre, not only for the children but also for the residents of Robinson Street and St Stephen's Avenue.

One main reason for choosing Kelsall Avenue for our daughter was the excellent outdoor play area. Some children who attend the nursery do not have gardens and to be able to play every day in a safe environment is fantastic.

Yes, a new play area would be provided at the children's centre, a modern one. Children need to grow, they need to learn through playing and exploring to expand their minds. At Kelsall Avenue they have been able to do this by running up and down hills, touching trees, they are able to see nature and flowers grow.

Will they be able to do this at the new 'modern' children's centre set in an urban setting? I think not. Will they be able to accommodate outdoor activities for 89 children at any one time?

It is our right and duty to give our children the best start in life. Our Government tells us that childhood obesity is on the increase, yet outdoor activity is on the decline and green areas are being taken away.

As parents and teachers we need to nurture our children to think healthy and encourage more sport.

Why couldn't Kelsall Avenue, with a total area of 5,476 sq m be extended, therefore retaining the beautiful surrounds and also alleviate the already congested area of Robinson Street and St Stephen's Avenue?
