A WOMAN admitted to Fairfield Hospital has died from rabies after being bitten by a dog abroad.
The 33-year-old, from Bury, was taken to Fairfield Hospital last week complaining of feeling ill after returning from Goa. It is believed doctors then diagnosed her condition as rabies and she was transferred to a hospital in Liverpool where she died from the infection at the weekend. Staff who treated the patient at Fairfield have been informed of the death and nurses who had been in close contact with the woman have been inoculated.
A spokeswoman for Bury PCT confirmed there had been a recent death from rabies that had been contracted abroad but it had posed no risk to anyone and the Health Protection Agency had been informed.
Rabies is an acute viral infection that is nearly always fatal.
