AN "enraged" man wrapped telephone cable and underwear strapping around the neck of a woman in an attempted rape, a court heard.

The claims were made at Preston Crown Court on the opening day of David McCarthy's trial who faces 11 charges over the alleged attack on December 11, 2004.

The 43-year-old, of Clarendon Street, Accrington, denies three counts of threatening to kill his victim -- who cannot be identified for legal reasons -- attempted rape, assault causing bodily harm, two counts of assault by penetration and sexual assault.

McCarthy also denies three counts of carrying out assault by beating, where he is accused of attempting to strangle her using underwear strapping and telephone cord and trying to smother her with a pillow.

Heather Lloyd, prosecuting, said McCarthy and his victim had consensual sex moments before the alleged offences.

But while the two lay in bed McCarthy brought up the name of a man she knew. Miss Lloyd said the defendant rummaged through the alleged victim's phone looking for the man's name and "ripped up a red bra and knickers set he believed had been bought for her by him.

"He became incensed and got on top of her when he wrapped a strap from her bra around her head shouting 'I'm going to kill you'," Miss Lloyd explained.

After discovering pictures of the alleged victim with her male friend "he went ballistic and started shoving the photos in her face," she added.

Miss Lloyd said: "He tied telephone cable around her neck, pulling it tight saying: 'I'm going to kill you'. He held her nose so she couldn't breathe and covered her face with a pillow, again saying he was going to kill her. She was naked and petrified."

During the ordeal, the prosecution claim McCarthy carried out the sexual offences he is accused of, including the attempted rape.

"The prosecution say these were the actions of an enraged man," Miss Lloyd added.

The case is expected to last four to five days.
