TEENAGE defender Richard Keogh will not now be joining Burnley following a dramatic weekend U-turn.

The former Stoke City stopper, 18, reported to have signed a two-year deal with the Clarets, was expected to make his debut in Saturday's goalless draw away at Cheltenham Town.

However, after discussions with his agent late on Friday night, Burnley pulled the plug on the proposed move and will now look elsewhere to strengthen the squad.

A club statement read: "Richard Keogh will no longer be signing for Burnley Football Club as originally reported.

"The club understood that the 18 year old wished to join, but after further discussions with his agent an agreement could not be made and the club has decided not to pursue its interest."

Meanwhile, boss Steve Cotterill declared himself happy with the first work-out of the summer at Whaddon Road. The Clarets, who handed debuts to all five new summer signings, always appeared in control against the League Two outfit but could not find the killer touch.

And Cotterill, who appointed former Robins' defender Michael Duff captain on the return to their former club, said: "It was a great day all round and I really enjoyed it.

"I knew it would be a decent day and as first games go I am pleased because this was another new team, like last season.

"It's always important to start off with a clean sheet, a goal and a win and the same applies to pre-season. We've got the clean sheet now, so all we need now is the goal and the win to get us up and running."

Cotterill added: "It is obviously difficult for the new boys to be dropped straight in, but they were all good and I thought the fitness levels were excellent."

Cotterill has now given the players a well-earned day off before they resume training tomorrow ahead of Wednesday's traditional pre-season friendly away at Accrington Stanley.
