BLACKBURN Hawks completed a weekend double with a thrilling last-gasp win at home to Telford Tigers last night, a tumultuous finale to a sensational game leaving the large crowd gasping for breath.

Only two Hawks goals in the final two minutes separated them from a fired up Telford outfit who seemed to add another dimension to their game whenever they visit the Arena.

Hawks somehow found sufficient reserves of character to turn it round and win the third period 6-3 after trailing for most of the night, but player-coach Ryan Kummu was far from satisfied with his side's display.

"I was upset by the way we played and the lack of application shown in some areas," fumed the demanding Canadian.

"I let everybody know how I felt, including myself, and I can tell you there'll be some pretty intense training this week."

It was Hawks performance in the first two sections, which went 3-2 to Telford and 1-1, which caused Kummu most concern.

Telford were threatening to complete a second victory of the season in Blackburn despite not being allowed to ice former Hawk Russ Plant due to a transfer technicality. But when the visitors extended their lead to 6-4 deep in the third, it looked as if their reputation as Hawks' bogey side would be strengthened.

But an incredible three-goals-in-a-minute blast from Haig and Chartrand (2) nosed Hawks in front for the first time with 10 minutes remaining.

When Telford levelled four minutes later there were few prepared to back the home side, but Oleg Sinkov capped an amazing effort by scrambling the eighth, before skipper Haig brought the house down by placing the clincher into the vacated Telford net from the length of the rink.

Scoresheet: Chartrand 3+3, Haig 2+5, Sinkov 2+3, Kummu 1+3, Cowmeadow 1+0, MacNaughton 0+2. There were no such outrageous swings of fortune at Chelmsford on Saturday when Hawks cruised to a 9-4 victory.

After taking the first two periods 4-1 and 5-2 Hawks - without the suspended Haig - stepped off the gas aND conceded a solitary third period score without reply.

Chartrand was again Hawks' "Shearer" with four goals and two assists while Kummu and Sinkov each bagged two with Paul Fleury claiming the other.

Scoresheet: Chartrand 4+2, Kummu 2+2, Sinkov 2+1, Fleury 1+0, Mills 0+1, MacNaughton 0+2.

"I think the guys have been on a bit of cakewalk lately," said Kummu.

"People have been telling them how well they have done and what a good season it's been, but we need to remember there is still a fair chunk of it left yet and it's not the time to start congratulating yourselves."
