IMPROVEMENTS to the M62-M66 Simister roundabout began last Thursday as soon as the morning traffic peak subsided. The closure of the roundabout's inside lane will leave only two lanes open so delays, say the Highways Agency, will be inevitable.

The closure will allow contractors to widen the corners of the slip roads to make it easier and safer for three lanes of traffic to manoeuvre.

Project manager Neil Hewitt said: "Ideally we would have liked to have kept all three lanes open at peak periods but some deep excavations are necessary and it will not be safe to open up the inside lane until we are finished."

The £100,000 scheme is not expected to affect traffic on either the M62 or the M66.

But drivers turning at the junction are advised to follow the signed alternative routes at peak hours.

The work is expected to last just over two weeks.
