A MAJOR award has been presented to Rolls-Royce for one of its aero engines.
The Institute of Mechanical Engineers awarded the Engineering Heritage Hallmark award to the firm for its RB211 engine for which the East Lancashire's factory manufactures components. Previous winners of the award have included the Harrier aircraft and the Thames barrier.
"The RB211 stands apart as the first production aero engine to adopt the three shaft configuration," said Chris Price, president of the Institution.
The three-shaft feature improves reliability and durability of the engine. Rolls-Royces Barnoldswick site makes wide-chord fan blades and front bearing housings for the latest versions of the RB211.
