HEALTH chiefs have said they believe a Rossendale man who died from Creutzfeldt Jacob Disease did not have one of the new strains linked to the beef crisis.
But they would not say if a post mortem examination would be or had been carried out on Leonard Alan Pope of Hillside Way, Shawforth.
Mr Pope, who lived with his wife, Margaret, is understood to have worked as a consultant chemical engineer.
He died in Birch Hill Hospital, Rochdale, but Bury and Rochdale Health Authority spokeswoman said: "The evidence suggests that it is not one of the new strains currently being associated with beef and BSE."
She said Mr Pope was almost 60 years old and had no farming connections. Around 85 per cent of the world's cases of CJD occurred in that sporadic form.
The spokeswoman added: "We will not give further details about this case, following a request from the family and the trust."
