MORE THAN £50,000 of lottery cash is to be used to attract more voluntary groups to Hyndburn.

The Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) will use their latest windfall to open an office in Accrington.

A development officer and administrator will be based at the new site with a brief to encourage existing voluntary organisations to expand and new ones to start up.

CVS Chief officer, Hazel Catt, said: "We are very pleased with this news. At present, we are based at Blackburn but we have identified a need for a similar service in the Accrington area."

She added: "It has high unemployment, poor housing and a high proportion of ethnic minority residents.

"There is currently very little voluntary sector activity in the area so we hope the new officer will form links with the Hyndburn Partnership and the local council."

The cash will cover costs for 18 months. After that the CVS hopes to find funding from other sources.
