MYSTERY surrounds the disappearence of 1,400 copies of the Lancaster University's student union magazine this week.

Editor Louis Barfe suspects foul play and claims that distribution of the tabloid magazine, SCAN, which has a circulation of 2,000, was sabotaged because it contained a controversial article about the current Student Union President Liz Matthews.

Mr Barfe said: "At the moment we are seeking legal advice about the missing copies. The incident puts us in a very difficult situation with our advertisers and it will cost us money to reimburse them in out next edition."

University bosses claim they know nothing of the missing papers and spokeswoman Vicky Tyrrell said: "Until an official complaint has been made it is for the Student Union to deal with."
